The Alectis ciliaris is also known as the Pennant-fish and Threadfin trevally – both quite apt names considering the length of their dorsal fins. These trailing fins are thought to mimic the fronds of a jellyfish, possibly to discourage predators. These wispy fins gradually recede as the fish develops into adulthood.
With these fins playing such a large part of the fish's character, I wanted to get an image put them in centre stage. Crouching down low and looking up, I focused on this individual in the hope that it would change direction suddenly. It did, allowing me to fit all of the fronds within the frame.
